Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

4 – Heart of Midlothian secured their first league win of the season by thumping St Mirren 4-0 at Tynecastle. Goals from Kenneth Vargas, Daniel Oyegoke, James Wilson and Blair Spittal helped the Jam Tarts climb off the foot of the table in Neil Critchley’s first game in charge. This was Hearts’ biggest win over Saints since October 1989, when they also ran out 4-0 winners thanks to a John Robertson double and goals from Scott Crabbe and John Colquhoun. Hearts have lost just one of their last 10 matches against St Mirren at Tynecastle in all competitions stretching back to 2014 – they have eight wins and a draw, with that only loss coming in April 2023.

6 – Kilmarnock defeated Rangers 1-0 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to climb to 7th place in the William Hill Premiership. Marley Watkins made it four goals in his last five appearances to hand Derek McInnes’ side back-to-back victories. Killie have won six of their last 10 league matches against Rangers in Ayrshire, all of them by a single-goal margin. Watkins’ goal was Killie’s 10th of the season – nine of those have come in the second half, and five have been from the 85th minute onwards. Killie are now unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions.

10 – Livingston moved up to 2nd place in the William Hill Championship thanks to a 2-1 victory over Ayr United at Somerset Park. Robbie Muirhead and Scott Pittman scored the goals as David Martindale’s side leapfrogged their opponents in the table and kept themselves four points behind leaders Falkirk with a game in hand. The Lions are unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions, having picked up six wins and four draws since losing to Spartans in the Premier Sports Cup in July. This is Livingston’s longest unbeaten run since they went 14 without loss in Martindale’s first three months in charge between November 2020 and February 2021 – a run which started with a win over Ayr.

5 – Montrose defeated Kelty Hearts 2-0 at New Central Park to climb to 2nd place in William Hill League 1. Matheus Machado and Ben McIver-Redwood got the goals for Stewart Petrie’s side, who are just a point behind leaders Alloa Athletic. The Gable Endies maintained their 100% league record against Kelty in Fife – they have won five out of five at New Central Park since Kelty were promoted in 2022. This division remains incredibly competitive, with just three points now separating the top six clubs.

0 – Elgin City beat Spartans 3-1 at Ainslie Park to move to within two points of leaders East Fife at the top of William Hill League 2. Goals from Kyle Girvan, Oliver McDonald and Dylan Gavin helped Allan Hale’s side maintain their unbeaten start to the league season. Elgin have five wins and five draws in the league so far this season – their tally of 20 points from 10 games is their best ever start to a season in the SFL/SPFL – their previous best was 18 points in 2004/05, 2016/17 and 2020/21. This current 10-match run is their longest unbeaten league sequence since they joined the SFL back in 2000.
